We develop the general formalism to study the low energy regime of the brane world. We apply our formalism to the single brane model where the AdS/CFT correspondence will take an important role. We present the light-cone gauge fixed Lagrangian for the M5-brane; it has a residual ‘exotic’ gauge invariance with the group of 5-volume preserving diffeomorphisms, SDiff5, as gauge group. Connection between the partition function for the 2D sigma model with boundary pertubations and the low energy effective action for massless fields in the open string theory is discussed. In the non-abelian case with a stack of N D-branes, the terms up to the order of α 3 are found.
